In an age where social media often shapes modern identities, a seven-year-old from Punjab is using it to celebrate tradition. Sivkan Kaur, a young dancer from Amritsar, is quickly gaining recognition for her spirited performances that blend youthful energy with deep-rooted cultural pride.

Clad in vibrant Punjabi attire, with a parandi swaying rhythmically as she dances, Sivkan’s performances have struck a chord with audiences far beyond her hometown. Her videos—rich in colour and authenticity—have earned her a growing following of over 2.9 lakh on Instagram, with several clips crossing the million-view mark.

Her rising popularity recently translated into formal recognition when she was honoured with the Bharat Vibhushan Award at the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. The award was presented by Kultar Singh Sandhwan, who lauded her as the “Little Star of Punjabi Traditional Dance.” The honour acknowledged not only her artistic talent but also her role in promoting Punjab’s cultural heritage among younger generations.

Describing her as a symbol of cultural continuity, Sandhwan encouraged Sivkan to continue her journey and inspire others to embrace traditional art forms.

A student of Grade 2 at Invictus International School in Amritsar, Sivkan balances academics with her passion for dance. Her parents, Dr Gurpreet Singh and Dr Harpuneet Kaur, say her inclination toward dance was evident from an early age. “She is naturally gifted and genuinely enjoys what she does. For her, the joy of dancing matters more than any award,” her father shared.

Her achievements extend beyond social media fame. In July 2025, she was named Best Junior Content Creator of the Year at CLS 2025, a major creator summit in North India. Since then, she has continued to produce short dance videos featuring both contemporary hits and traditional Punjabi folk music.

One such performance, set to the popular track “Kaali Activa,” went viral, garnering over three million views and catapulting her into the spotlight. The viral success opened doors for her to perform alongside prominent Punjabi artists such as Jazzy B and Kulwinder Billa. She has also received praise from noted names in the industry, including Jaspinder Narula and Manmohan Waris.

Despite the growing attention, Sivkan remains grounded. For her, the highlight of each day is returning home after school and dancing. For her audience, however, she represents something larger—a young ambassador preserving and revitalising Punjab’s rich cultural traditions in a rapidly evolving digital world.
