In recent days, a piece of news came out of New Zealand that deeply hurt the hearts of the Sikh community. However, hardly anyone made the effort to reflect on the reasons behind it. In the past, the Sikh community in New Zealand had carved out a distinct and positive identity in people’s hearts. Bakshi Kanwaljeet Singh was elected as an MP from there several times and also held ministerial positions. Then what suddenly happened that some local people came out onto the streets and began opposing the Sikh community’s Nagar Kirtan?

Lakbinder Singh, Senior Vice President of Takht Patna Sahib, believes that today is the age of social media, where any action you take can reach foreign countries within minutes or even seconds. Some videos from Punjab were going viral on social media in which people disguised as Nihang Sikhs were entering the homes of members of the Christian community and stopping them from performing their religious rituals. Just as the hearts of Sikhs were hurt, Christians too must have felt hurt by such actions. Extremism is not limited to Sikhism alone; every religion currently has elements of fanaticism dominating it. Therefore, before doing anything, one should not ignore its consequences.

Some people also believe that the frequent street protests organized by Sikh extremists living abroad, who call themselves supporters of Khalistan, cause serious inconvenience to local residents. These individuals trap young people who have gone abroad from India for studies or work and make them carry out wrongful activities. The increasing involvement of Indian youths in gangsterism and various other crimes is also creating hatred in the hearts of foreigners against Punjabis, especially Sikhs. Therefore, we must first reform ourselves; only then can such incidents be prevented.

It is also seen that in India, Sikhs receive complete respect. Sikh people not only freely observe their customs and festivals, but governments also provide full support for these celebrations. On the other hand, Khalistanis sitting abroad are always eager to spoil the country’s atmosphere by making baseless and absurd statements. Yet, after such a major incident in New Zealand, not a single word was spoken by them. The consequences of the activities carried out by these Khalistani elements ultimately have to be borne by ordinary Sikhs.
