From India with Love: US Vice President JD Vance Praises India’s Promise

by Harleen Kaur

Embarking on his first official trip to India, US Vice President J.D. Vance offered effusive commendations for the nation’s dynamism, its storied past, and its forward-looking ambitions, drawing a stark contrast to what he described as a prevailing sense of self-doubt in parts of the Western world.

Accompanied by his wife, Usha, and their three young children, Vance arrived in New Delhi on April 21 for a four-day diplomatic mission. During a press briefing today, he painted a vivid portrait of India’s unique vitality. “In many countries, there’s this drive toward conformity, a desire to blend in,” he remarked. “Here, there’s a joyful pride, an energy that brims with possibility.”

The vice president did not hold back in extolling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, noting that his approval ratings “would make me jealous.” Recalling an intimate dinner at the Prime Minister’s official residence on Monday evening, Vance described the hospitality—and the cuisine—as “extraordinary.” His youngest, seven-year-old Ewan, was so taken with the experience that he confided afterward, “Dad, I think maybe I could live in India.”

Vance also shared a touching anecdote from the summit in France this February, where he and Modi first met at an AI-focused conference. Noting that his second son, Vivek, would celebrate his fifth birthday during the India trip, Vance was moved when the Prime Minister personally stopped by their residence to offer birthday wishes and a small gift. “That gesture spoke volumes about his character,” Vance said, his voice softening. “Usha and I were genuinely touched.”

Reflecting on India’s blend of ancient heritage and cutting-edge innovation, Vance marveled at the country’s architectural splendors and rich traditions, yet he was equally impressed by its “laser-like focus” on future growth. He praised Modi as a leader who thinks not merely in terms of years, but in centuries—and as a negotiator whose tenacity earns the respect of even his firmest counterparts.

Drawing parallels with President Donald Trump, Vance highlighted the strong rapport his children have formed with both leaders: “My kids feel a genuine connection with President Trump—and now with Prime Minister Modi, too.” He attributed this to the leaders’ shared conviction in their nations’ people and futures. “That kind of belief inspires remarkable loyalty,” he concluded.

As Vance’s visit continues through April 24, his remarks underscore a deepening partnership between Washington and New Delhi, anchored by mutual respect and a shared optimism about the possibilities ahead.
