Trump Signals Tough Stance on Khalistani Separatists, Vows Stronger Ties with India

by Antariksh Singh

U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a firm stance against anti-India elements operating on American soil, including Khalistani separatists, as he signaled a shift in approach compared to the Biden administration. Speaking at a recent press conference, Trump criticized President Joe Biden’s handling of U.S.-India relations and emphasized his commitment to working closely with India on issues of crime and extradition.

“I don’t think India had a good relationship with the Biden administration,” Trump stated. “A lot of things happened that weren’t very appropriate between India and the Biden administration.”

His remarks come amid growing concerns in New Delhi about separatist activities and individuals seeking refuge in the United States. Trump underscored his willingness to take stronger action, highlighting the impending extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-origin businessman accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

“We are giving a very violent man back to India immediately. There are more to follow because we have quite a few requests,” he added, signaling that additional extraditions could be in the pipeline.

Trump’s comments align with India’s longstanding concerns about the presence of Khalistani extremists in the U.S. and their alleged role in destabilizing Indian interests. His assertion that his administration would “work with India on crime and make it good for India” suggests a policy shift aimed at cracking down on individuals engaged in anti-India activities from American soil.

This statement has been seen as an effort to reassure New Delhi of stronger bilateral ties under a potential future Trump administration. In contrast, India-U.S. relations under Biden have faced challenges, including diplomatic tensions over extradition matters and law enforcement cooperation on transnational crimes.

Trump’s remarks have already garnered attention in both Washington and New Delhi, with analysts speculating whether his approach could lead to more active collaboration in tackling terrorism and extremist elements. His position on India-related issues is likely to play a role in shaping diplomatic relations between the two democracies.
