Sikh Spirit Shines: Nationwide Feast Promotes Peace and Oneness in the US

by Antariksh Singh

In a remarkable display of community spirit and volunteerism, the Sikh non-profit organization Let’s Share a Meal (LSM) served over 10,000 free vegetarian meals across 80 locations in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Connecticut this past week. The event, known as a ‘langar,’ drew more than 700 dedicated volunteers, highlighting the growing impact of the organization in the region.

Founded on the principles of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, LSM has expanded its mission to provide nutritious meals to those in need while fostering values of peace, harmony, and unity. “Let’s Share a Meal was inspired by the life and teachings of Guru Nanak, who established the concept of Langar, or community kitchen,” explained Onkar Singh, a key organizer of the recent event. He proudly noted that the organization has served over one million meals across the United States since its inception.

The recent feast marked a significant milestone for LSM, which now distributes more than 20,000 meals annually, a substantial increase from the 1,500 meals served in its first year. This growth is attributed to the unwavering commitment of volunteers and the generosity of donors who have supported the cause over the years.

Harleen Kaur, a volunteer with LSM for over 15 years, shared her enthusiasm about the organization’s expansion. “I have been part of this incredible effort for over 15 years, and I am so grateful to see how it has grown. Every year, more and more people — volunteers and donors alike — come together to make this possible,” she said.

LSM’s efforts extend beyond merely providing meals; the organization aims to instill core values in the younger generation. “We are trying to teach our children the core values of our religion, which include peace, harmony, and Oneness. Oneness is not just for Sikhs, but for all of humanity,” Singh added. “The world is one community, and nobody should be hungry or unequal. We are proud that over 700 volunteers, including many from the broader American community, have come together to support this cause.”

The success of the recent langar underscores the vital role that community-driven initiatives play in addressing hunger and fostering inclusivity. As LSM continues to grow, its commitment to serving thousands more individuals each year remains steadfast, embodying the timeless teachings of Guru Nanak in today’s diverse society.
