Revolutionizing Energy: Norway Applauds Indian Biomass Plant’s Innovative Approach

by Antariksh Singh

In a groundbreaking exchange of ideas and collaboration, a high-level delegation from Norway, led by Minister of International Development Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, recently visited the biomass plant of Sukhbir Agro Energy Limited (SAEL) in Hakumat Singh Wala village. The delegation took a keen interest in understanding the process of electricity generation through crop residue, a sustainable initiative that has caught the attention of global leaders in environmental conservation.

Minister Anne Beathe Tvinnereim praised the commendable efforts of both the district administration and SAEL in curbing pollution while simultaneously harnessing the potential of stubble straw for electricity production. “It is a win-win situation for both farmers and the administration. With such an initiative, not only does air pollution decrease, but it also leads to the creation of numerous job opportunities. Additionally, farmers benefit economically by monetizing their crop residue,” remarked Minister Anne Beathe.

Jasbir Awla, the Managing Director of SAEL, provided insights into the significant strides the plant has made since 2019. Having procured an impressive 10 lakh tonnes of paddy straw, the plant has set an ambitious target of acquiring 40,000 tonnes in the near future. Awla emphasized that this increased procurement will contribute to the generation of more power. “This year alone, we have successfully generated approximately 43 lakh megawatt-hours of electricity,” added Awla, showcasing the plant’s commitment to sustainable energy production.

The delegation also engaged with DC Rajesh Dhiman, who shared the historical importance of the district and shed light on the multifaceted benefits of the biomass plant’s operations. The Norwegian officials further convened with District Food and Supply Officers to gain insights into the intricacies of the Public Distribution System (PDS) scheme, showcasing the delegation’s holistic approach to understanding the local dynamics.

Notable figures present during the visit included May Elin Stener, the Ambassador of Norway to India and Sri Lanka, Johan Lie Hammerstrom, senior advisor in the Secretariat of the Minister of International Development (Norway), and Hakon Gulbrandsen, among others.

This collaborative exchange not only highlights the strides India is making in sustainable energy practices but also underscores the global importance of such initiatives. The visit of the Norwegian delegation to the SAEL biomass plant serves as a testament to the growing international recognition of innovative solutions that address environmental concerns while fostering economic development. As the world seeks new paths toward a greener future, partnerships like these set the stage for shared success in the pursuit of sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
