Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar has appointed Dr. Karamjeet Singh as its new Vice-Chancellor, marking a significant leadership transition for the esteemed institution. The Governor’s secretariat officially announced the three-year tenure of Dr. Singh, a decision welcomed by the academic community.
Dr. Karamjeet Singh, an accomplished scholar with an MCom and a PhD in Finance, brings an impressive 38-year legacy in teaching and research to GNDU. His extensive experience includes serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University in Patiala since 2020, where he was instrumental in advancing the university’s outreach and educational initiatives.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Singh has held pivotal administrative roles, including a syndicate member at Panjab University, Chandigarh, and a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Expert Committee. His contributions to higher education were recognized in 2023 when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award, underscoring his dedication and impact in the field.
Dr. Singh’s appointment follows the tenure of Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, who led GNDU from June 2017 until November 16. The transition comes at a critical time, as the university had been operating without a Vice-Chancellor for the first time in its history, a situation that drew attention from local leaders. Gurjeet Singh Aujla, the Congress Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar, voiced concerns over the administrative void, emphasizing the importance of stable leadership for the university’s progress.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Singh expressed his commitment to fostering academic excellence and enhancing the university’s research capabilities. “I am honored to lead GNDU and look forward to working with the dedicated faculty and students to build on the university’s strong foundation,” he stated.
