UK Collaboration Advances Healthcare Innovation; Exploring AI in Dementia Care

by Harleen Kaur

In a groundbreaking initiative to foster collaboration across academia, healthcare, and industry, Lovely Professional University (LPU) recently hosted a pioneering co-design workshop on ‘Explainable Artificial Intelligence-Powered Tools for the Early Detection and Management of Dementia’. This significant event, supported by Nottingham Trent University (UK) and the Applied Intelligence and Informatics Lab, UK, marked a pivotal moment in the quest for innovative healthcare solutions.

Distinguished guests including Dr. Mufti Mahmud from Nottingham Trent University’s CCBI Research Group, and Dr. Mohammed Mostafizur Rahman from the American International University Bangladesh, joined forces with leading figures such as Prof. Dr. Lovi Raj Gupta, Pro-Vice Chancellor of LPU, and Dr. Gaurav Sethi, to address one of India’s pressing healthcare challenges: dementia management.

Dr. Mahmud underscored the urgency of tackling dementia amidst India’s rapidly ageing population and strained healthcare resources. He highlighted the indispensable role of Explainable AI in providing transparent and accurate diagnoses, thereby fostering trust among healthcare providers and families. This transparency, he emphasized, is crucial for enhancing patient outcomes through personalized care plans.

The workshop unfolded with Dr. Mahmud guiding participants through the evolution of AI models, from opaque ‘black-box’ systems to transparent, explainable AI. Dr. Mostafizur Rahman contributed valuable insights, enriching the discourse with perspectives from his extensive academic background.

Real-world experiences from Dr. Anmol Singh Rai, a noted neurologist at Shrimann Super Speciality Hospital, brought a practical dimension to the discussions. Dr. Rai shared poignant stories of patients grappling with dementia, shedding light on treatment protocols and emphasizing the potential of AI-driven tools like ChatBOTs in augmenting healthcare delivery while addressing pertinent security and privacy concerns.

Dr. Lovi Raj Gupta, in his address, highlighted the transformative impact of developing explainable AI tools tailored for dementia management. He stressed the workshop’s significance in integrating diverse perspectives towards crafting user-centric solutions that resonate in the Indian healthcare landscape.

The event concluded with a resounding call to action, urging stakeholders to continue collaborating in harnessing AI’s potential to revolutionize dementia care. As the global healthcare community navigates increasingly complex challenges, initiatives like LPU’s workshop stand as beacons of hope, illuminating pathways towards a future where technology empowers compassionate and effective healthcare solutions.

In essence, LPU’s commitment to bridging the gap between academia, healthcare, and industry sets a precedent for collaborative innovation in healthcare—an inspiring testament to the transformative power of interdisciplinary cooperation in addressing humanity’s most pressing health challenges.
