Summit Reveals How Punjab is Influencing Global Education and Migration Trends

by Dr. Jasneet Bedi

A recent summit focused on global migration and higher education trends, hosted by the Amritsar chapter of FICCI FLO in collaboration with Henley & Partners and CanAm Enterprises, brought together experts to dissect the evolving landscape of international mobility. Held at the Hotel Taj Swarna, the event underscored key insights into investment, migration, and global education.

Tess Wilkinson, Director of Education Services at Henley & Partners, delivered a compelling presentation on the complexities of global education. She emphasized Punjab’s significant role in international student migration, noting that 12.5 percent of Indian students studying abroad hail from the state. “This substantial figure highlights the need for robust information and digital literacy to ensure secure and informed migration choices for families aiming for destinations like the US or North America,” Wilkinson explained.

With 1.33 million Indian students currently pursuing studies abroad, India has become a prominent player in global migration. STEM subjects—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—remain the most sought-after fields. In response to the growing demand, countries such as the UK and Australia are contemplating the establishment of local branches of their universities in India to facilitate easier access for students. “Given this landscape, it is crucial for students to plan their education and migration strategies well in advance and with careful legal consideration,” Wilkinson advised.

The summit also explored the intersection of migration and investment. Rohit Bhardwaj, Country Head, India, and Director of Private Clients at Henley & Partners, highlighted how strategic investments are increasingly influencing family migration patterns. “Climate change is emerging as a significant driver behind family relocations, with affluent individuals from metropolitan areas looking towards Europe, the Middle East, and North America for investment opportunities and resettlement. Notably, the Caribbean, European nations, and the UAE have become popular destinations for investment-based relocations among Indians,” Bhardwaj noted.

Dr. Simarpreet Sandhu, Chairperson of the FLO Amritsar Chapter, emphasized the summit’s role in enhancing financial literacy and educational planning. “The event not only provided valuable insights into investment and educational trends but also fostered meaningful discussions on navigating the global opportunities landscape. It exemplified our collective commitment to advancing financial literacy and educational excellence on a global scale,” Sandhu said.

The Global Mobility and Education Summit served as a pivotal platform for discussing the intricate dynamics of global migration and education, offering attendees a comprehensive understanding of how to navigate and capitalize on emerging trends in a borderless world.
