A Sikh woman from Punjab who disappeared during a pilgrimage to Pakistan late last year is expected to be brought back to India today, bringing a possible end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding her fate, officials said.

The woman, identified as Sarabjit Kaur of Kapurthala district, had travelled to Pakistan in November as part of a Sikh pilgrims’ group to participate in celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. However, she went missing during a visit to Gurdwara Nankana Sahib, triggering concern among her family and the wider Sikh community.

While there had been earlier indications that she would be repatriated on Monday, the process was delayed due to incomplete paperwork. Attari Deputy Superintendent of Police Yadwinder Singh confirmed that the necessary formalities are now being finalised. “There were issues related to documentation, which caused the delay. These are being resolved, and she is expected to be repatriated today,” he said.

Sarabjit Kaur had entered Pakistan on a visitor’s visa as part of the pilgrims’ jatha on November 4, 2025. The group returned to India on November 13 without her. In the days that followed, reports surfaced claiming that she had converted to Islam and married a Pakistani national, Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura near Lahore.

The case also drew legal attention across the border. Mahinder Pal Singh, a former member of the Punjab Assembly in Pakistan, moved the Lahore High Court seeking Sarabjit Kaur’s return to India. In his petition, he questioned the legality of issuing her a single-entry visa and called for her immediate repatriation.

With officials now indicating that the remaining hurdles have been cleared, her return is being closely watched by her family and authorities on both sides, who hope the long-running episode will finally reach a resolution.
