Punjab is ushering in a new era for its mining sector with the launch of a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence for Mining and Geology, established through a recent Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar.

By harnessing advanced technologies such as SONAR and LiDAR, the facility will conduct both pre- and post-mining surveys with unprecedented accuracy. Detailed assessments will also be carried out before and after the monsoon season, ensuring that riverbeds and mining sites are comprehensively evaluated.

In a groundbreaking move, Punjab has become the first state in India to implement a Digital Mining Management System. This innovative online system will offer daily data updates and establish clear accountability, tracking both legal and illegal sand extraction in real time. The integration of satellite, drone, and ground surveys promises to deliver precise insights into the active mining sites and monitor sand deposits in dams and rivers—critical for flood prevention and protecting agricultural lands.
