In a significant development for the agricultural sector, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has signed Memorandums of Agreement (MoA) with Arizona Seeds Pvt Ltd, Patiala, to advance the commercial production of two promising vegetable hybrids. The agreement, formalized by Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research at PAU, and Mr. Mohammad Anwar, Managing Director of Arizona Seeds Pvt Ltd, aims to enhance the availability and distribution of Cucumber Hybrid PKH-11 and Tomato Hybrid PTH-2.
Dr. A.S. Dhatt expressed his appreciation for the collaborative effort, congratulating the key contributors from PAU. He acknowledged Dr. T.S. Dhillon, Head-cum-Principal Vegetable Breeder; Dr. S.K. Jindal, Principal Vegetable Breeder; and Dr. R.K. Dhall, Principal Olericulturist, for their pivotal roles in bringing these hybrids to commercial fruition.
Dr. S.K. Jindal shed light on the Tomato Hybrid PTH-2, which boasts a high yield potential of 270 quintals per acre. This variety is distinguished by its round, deep red, medium-sized fruits, weighing 75-80 grams each. With a firm texture, 3-4 locules, and a total soluble solids (TSS) content of 4.2%, it is not only resistant to late blight and root-knot nematodes but also suitable for processing.
On the other hand, Dr. R.K. Dhall detailed the attributes of Cucumber Hybrid PKH-11, describing it as a gynoecious and parthenocarpic hybrid ideal for poly/net house cultivation. The plants yield 1-2 seedless, bitterness-free fruits per node, which are moderately ribbed, cylindrical, and dark green. Each cucumber measures 16-18 cm in length and weighs between 150-160 grams. The hybrid matures in 45 days after sowing in September and 60 days in January, with average yields of 320 quintals per acre and 370 quintals per acre, respectively.
Dr. Khushdeep Dharni, Associate Director of the Technology Marketing and IPR Cell, highlighted the importance of such MoAs in the dissemination of PAU-developed vegetable hybrids. “These agreements are vital for ensuring that high-quality seeds are widely available, benefiting both farmers and the broader agricultural community,” he noted.
The MoA signing ceremony was also attended by Dr. G.S. Manes, ADR (Agri Engineering), Dr. T.S. Dhillon, and Mr. Arshad Nadeem, a breeder from Arizona Seeds, reflecting the collaborative spirit of this venture.
This partnership marks a crucial step in advancing agricultural innovation and improving the quality and productivity of vegetable crops in the region.
