In a vibrant celebration of environmental commitment, the Government Senior Secondary School at Gandhi Camp hosted a district-level prize distribution event on Saturday as part of the ‘Sustainability Leadership Program’. Led by District Education Officer, Secondary Dr Gurinderjit Kaur, the ceremony honored the dedication of students and teachers from 20 schools who actively participated in a series of sustainability initiatives.

The eight-week program, which ran from October to November 2024, challenged participants with a variety of eco-friendly projects including waste management drives, composting workshops, creative poster-making, informative power point presentations, and educational tours of local waste management plants. Each school’s team, comprising one nodal teacher and three students, showcased innovative approaches to fostering a cleaner, greener community.

At the event, Municipal Corporation Engineer Charanjit Singh, along with the Inspector of Waste Management and Community Services, shared expert insights on best practices in waste management and school sanitation. Their contributions underscored the importance of community engagement and technical know-how in building sustainable public spaces.

In her address, Dr Gurinderjit Kaur stressed the critical role of empowering young minds to drive forward the sustainability agenda. “The future of our community depends on the proactive involvement of our students and teachers in creating environmentally sound practices,” she remarked. Principal and District Nodal Officer Kumud Sharma also expressed deep appreciation for the participants, acknowledging their hard work and commitment.

Awards were presented to schools achieving top honors at the district level, with special recognition given to those securing first, second, and third place. All participants walked away with certificates and live plants as tokens of gratitude for their efforts. The event also took a moment to applaud the behind-the-scenes staff, including Jatinder Kumar, Harjeet Kaur, Sunaina Pahwa, Simmi Maria, Shikha, Kavita Gupta, Kriti Mehta, and Monika, whose organizational prowess helped ensure the success of the celebration.

The function concluded on a high note with a community meal, reinforcing the spirit of togetherness and collective responsibility for a sustainable future. As the district moves forward, the success of the Sustainability Leadership Program is set to inspire more initiatives aimed at nurturing eco-conscious practices among the youth and educators alike.
