by Manjari Singh

In a burst of vibrant hues and delicate petals, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is set to welcome flower enthusiasts to the state’s inaugural tulip garden this February. With over 2,000 bulbs sourced from the picturesque landscapes of Holland, the garden promises to be a visual extravaganza, featuring eight different varieties of tulips.

Parminder Singh, the head of the Floriculture Department at PAU, shared the excitement surrounding the upcoming bloom. “We have planted over 2,000 bulbs of eight different varieties of tulips. These have been procured from Holland through a private firm. We are expecting the flowers to bloom by February,” he revealed, hinting at the anticipation building among the gardening community and nature lovers alike.

Inspired by the successful initiative of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Institute of Himalayan Bio-resource Technology (IHBT), PAU embarked on its tulip journey. The CSIR-IHBT invested five years in developing tulip agro technology, successfully growing bulbs by meticulously creating temperature conditions akin to their natural habitat. Around 25 farmers in Lahaul and Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, also contributed to this endeavor.

Building on this knowledge, PAU’s own research station in Keylong, Himachal Pradesh, played a crucial role in the multiplication and re-planting of tulips in October. Dr. Parminder Singh highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “We have planted 2,000 bulbs in the flower bed with eight different varieties of tulips. These have been procured from Holland through a private firm in Delhi. We are expecting the flowers to bloom by February.”

Tulips, known for their exquisite beauty and diverse color palette, require specific temperature conditions for optimal growth. Dr. Singh explained that these plants thrive in environments where nights are colder, adding to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming spectacle.

As February approaches, the citizens of Ludhiana and beyond eagerly await the unveiling of this botanical masterpiece. The PAU tulip garden is poised to become a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering a mesmerizing experience of nature’s artistry right in the heart of Punjab. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or simply appreciate the beauty of blossoming flowers, the PAU tulip garden promises to be a must-visit destination for a breathtaking floral display. Get ready to witness the magic of tulips in full bloom, as Ludhiana gears up to host the splendor of the state’s first-ever tulip garden this coming February.
