The Punjab Education Department will narrate the life and teachings of Guru Teg Bahadur and his wife Mata Gujri to nearly 70 lakh students across the state. The 15-day programme, spanning from November 11 to 27, will be observed in approximately 27,000 schools during morning assemblies.
The move comes ahead of the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur, revered as the ninth Sikh Guru, whose supreme sacrifice for the protection of faith and human rights is deeply etched in India’s history.
Education Minister Harjot Bains said that the programme aims to acquaint students with the values and courage embodied by Sikh Gurus, Mata Gujri, and the four Sahibzadas. “Information related to their lives and martyrdom will be shared while maintaining full adherence to the religious code of conduct,” he said.
According to officials, the content has been divided into 15 daily segments, which will be digitally circulated to teachers for reading during the morning prayers. The initiative is being undertaken in close consultation with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body managing Sikh shrines.
Beyond schools, the Punjab School Education Board will also host special sessions. Additionally, all vice-chancellors and college principals—including those from private and aided institutions—have been directed to organise seminars and awareness programmes from October 27 to November 30.
In his communication to universities, Bains urged institutions to ensure that these events reflect Guru Teg Bahadur’s timeless message of selflessness, human rights, and unity. He further instructed that the proceedings maintain utmost religious decorum and sanctity.
This statewide observance, blending education with spiritual reflection, aims to inspire young minds with the enduring ideals of courage, compassion, and sacrifice that define Punjab’s heritage.
