Devotees from Punjab, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh gathered in large numbers on Sunday, filling gurdwaras with prayers, reflection, and jubilation as they marked the vibrant Baisakhi festival. The air was charged with devotion and cultural pride as worshippers paid homage at revered shrines, including the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Sri Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib, Takht Damdama Sahib in Bathinda, and Dukh Nivaran Sahib in Patiala.
The festival, celebrated with immense fervor every spring, holds profound historical and agricultural significance. Baisakhi not only heralds the beginning of the harvest season but also commemorates a pivotal moment in Sikh history. In 1699, during the sacred day of Baisakhi, the tenth Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh, founded the ‘Khalsa Panth’—a spiritual and martial order—by baptizing five devoted individuals, known as the ‘Panj Pyaras’, from diverse castes in the holy city of Anandpur Sahib. This historic event has come to symbolize the values of unity, equality, and selfless service within the Sikh community.
The multitude of visitors at the gurdwaras underlined the unbroken tradition of communal gathering and spiritual renewal. Chanting of hymns and the resonant beat of traditional drums created a solemn yet celebratory atmosphere, where devotees reconnected with their cultural heritage and paid tribute to the enduring legacy of Guru Gobind Singh.
Amidst the colorful celebrations and devotional processions, Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria extended warm greetings to the faithful, expressing his heartfelt wishes for prosperity and unity during this auspicious time. His message resonated with many, reinforcing the belief that festivals like Baisakhi are not only a celebration of agricultural abundance but also a reminder of the rich historical and spiritual bonds that continue to strengthen the community.
As the vibrant festivities continue to unfold, the essence of Baisakhi remains deeply etched in the hearts of those who participate—honoring a legacy that bridges the past with the promise of a bright, united future.
