Amritsar’s Heritage Walk Commemorates 105th Anniversary of Jallianwala Bagh Tragedy

by Manjari Singh

Amritsar, historically rich and steeped in the echoes of its past, commemorated the 105th anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy with solemnity and reflection. The city, pulsating with life, paused to remember the sacrifices made on April 13, 1919, in a poignant blend of remembrance and heritage celebration.

In a collaborative effort by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and the Amritsar Guide Association, a symbolic walk was organized. This walk served not only as a means to pay homage but also as a journey through the annals of history, enlightening participants about the deep-rooted heritage nestled within the walls of the city.

Commencing from the hallowed grounds of Jallianwala Bagh, where flowers were laid and respects paid to the brave souls who met their end in pursuit of freedom, the walk traversed through a tapestry of historical landmarks. Participants, guided by their reverence for the past, journeyed through the winding streets, each step resonating with the weight of history.

The route wove through the majestic Qila Ahluwalia, a testament to Amritsar’s regal past, and meandered past the serene Galli Ram Krishan Mandir, echoing with whispers of devotion. Chowk Jalebi Wala, alive with the bustle of everyday life, stood as a silent witness to the passage of time, while Akhara Sangalwala whispered tales of resilience and strength.

As the sun descended, casting golden hues upon the city, the heritage walk culminated back at the somber grounds of Jallianwala Bagh. Here, amidst the whispers of the past and the promises of tomorrow, participants stood united in remembrance, their hearts heavy with the weight of history yet hopeful for a future free from strife.

Earlier in the day, the district administration hosted a memorial event at Jallianwala Bagh. SDM Mankanwal Singh Chahal, standing alongside other officials, bowed their heads in reverence, offering tributes to the martyrs who etched their names in the annals of time.

As the echoes of the past reverberate through the streets of Amritsar, the city stands as a testament to resilience, remembrance, and the enduring spirit of humanity. In commemorating the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy, Amritsar reaffirms its commitment to honor the sacrifices of the past and to forge a future anchored in peace and harmony.
