Visiting Hemkund Sahib Becomes Much Easier
The ropeway will reduce the 9-hour journey to just 36 minutes, with a capacity for 36 passengers.
The Modi government at the center has approved the ropeway project for Kedarnath Dham and Hemkund Sahib. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared that the journey, which currently takes 8-9 hours, will be reduced to just 36 minutes. The ropeway will have a capacity for 36 passengers. The Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee President, Harmit Singh Kalka, General Secretary Jagdeep Singh Kahlo, and the entire Sikh community are expressing their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this initiative. With the start of this project, elderly people, the physically challenged, and others who had wished to visit but couldn’t due to poor roads and lack of time will now be able to visit.
Under the National Ropeway Development Program, ropeways will be constructed in Uttarakhand from Sonprayag to Kedarnath (12.9 km) and from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib Ji (12.4 km). National Highway Logistics Management will undertake the construction. Hemkund Sahib is located about 515 km from Delhi. The distance from Joshimath to Govindghat is around 47 km. The ropeway to Hemkund Sahib will cost approximately ₹2,730.13 crore, covering a distance of 12.4 km from Govindghat. The ropeway will carry 1,100 passengers per hour, and around 11,000 passengers per day. Hemkund Sahib is located in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 15,000 feet above sea level. The Gurudwara here opens for about 5 months each year, from May to September. Around 200,000 pilgrims visit this site annually.
