Decreasing Interest of Indian Students in Canada

by Sudeep Singh

For a long time, Indian students, especially the youth from Punjab, have shown an increasing inclination toward Canada. However, it is now being observed that this trend is gradually declining. Several reasons can be attributed to this shift, with the most significant factor being concerns about safety in Canada.

The frequent activities carried out by Khalistani supporters, such as the disrespect shown toward India’s national flag, and the lack of concrete action by the Canadian government against these individuals, have emboldened such elements. As a result, the general youth are beginning to feel unsafe.

Additionally, employment opportunities in Canada no longer seem as abundant. Although a large number of people of Indian origin, particularly Punjabis, still reside in Canada, if the current situation persists and the government fails to curb extremist activities, the day might not be far when Indian students lose interest in Canada entirely.

In recent times, Punjabi youth have also been disproportionately affected by incidents like Naxalite attacks, which could be another contributing factor. Changes in Canadian policies toward Indian students might also play a role, as the government has imposed various restrictions on the permits issued to students.

Sikh intellectual Prakash Singh Gill believes that this trend could be a positive sign for India and, in particular, for Punjab. If the youth of Punjab start seeking opportunities within their country instead of going abroad to secure their future, it could contribute significantly to the country’s development.
