Sikhism is regarded as one of the most respected religions in the world, dedicated to the service of humanity. The Sikh community, which spreads the message of “Sarbat da Bhala” (welfare of all), service, sacrifice, and brotherhood, has earned a distinct identity across the globe through hard work, honesty, and humanitarian service. Whether it was providing langar during natural disasters, helping humanity during the COVID-19 pandemic, or selflessly supporting weaker sections of society, the Sikh community has always delivered a message of humanity to the world.

However, the atmosphere today appears to be changing, and Khalistani supporters and extremists have played a major role in this shift, due to which the entire Sikh community often appears embarrassed. Sri Darbar Sahib, which is a center of faith for Guru Nanak’s followers around the world, attracts not only Sikhs but also millions of non-Sikh devotees. Yet, in recent times, incidents have emerged where non-Sikh devotees, who may lack knowledge of Sikh maryada (religious code of conduct), have been insulted by sevadars or volunteers. For example, in a recent incident, when a non-Sikh individual entered the holy sarovar with clothes on, instead of calmly explaining the maryada, a person on duty aggressively confronted him and used highly inappropriate language, as seen on social media.

Similarly, in the Darbar Sahib corridor, a voiceless animal that could not even express its pain was allegedly attacked repeatedly with a kirpan by a Nihang, resulting in its death. Although there has been no official confirmation, the incident has been widely circulated on social media, bringing embarrassment to Sikhism.

Over the past few years, Khalistan-supporting activities have damaged the positive image of the Sikh community at the global level. Violent demonstrations abroad, anti-India slogans, aggressive protests outside religious places, and the promotion of separatist agendas by certain extremist elements have dragged the entire Sikh community into unnecessary controversies. In countries such as Canada, Britain, the United States, and Australia, several incidents have surfaced in recent years where Khalistan-supporting groups attempted to promote extremism and radicalism under the guise of democratic freedom. Demonstrations outside Indian embassies, disrespect toward national symbols, tense activities near temples and religious places, and openly provocative statements inciting violence have affected not only India’s image but also the reputation of the global Sikh community.

The most serious issue is that in many countries around the world, ordinary people are unable to differentiate between Sikhism and Khalistani ideology. Due to the activities of a few extremist organizations, there is a growing tendency to view the entire Sikh community with suspicion, whereas the reality is that the majority of Sikhs believe in peace, brotherhood, and patriotism. Sikhs have always made proud contributions to India’s armed forces, judiciary, politics, industry, and social service. In such a situation, it is extremely unfortunate that the identity of the entire community is being affected by the activities of a few separatist elements.

The teachings of the Sikh Gurus also do not permit any form of extremism or hatred. Guru Nanak Dev Ji gave the message of uniting humanity, while Guru Gobind Singh Ji showed the path of fighting injustice along with protecting religion and humanity. Sikh history is a history of sacrifice, but those sacrifices were made not to divide society, but to protect humanity and justice. Therefore, linking Sikhism with separatism or violent politics goes against Gurmat ideology itself.

Today, there is a need for the global Sikh community to openly distance itself from such extremist elements that are harming the image of the Qaum. Gurudwaras and Sikh institutions must also ensure that religious platforms are not used for spreading hatred or political extremism. Instead of provoking youth in the name of history, they should be inspired toward education, service, leadership, and nation-building. The Sikh community has always been a strong pillar of nation-building and social harmony. It is important that the voices of peaceful and patriotic Sikhs receive greater recognition so that the true identity and core values of Sikhism can be presented before the world.

The identity of the Sikh Qaum has not been built on the edge of the sword, but on service, courage, and sacrifice. If some people attempt to associate this identity with extremism for personal or political interests, then the damage will not only be borne by India but by the entire Sikh community.
