Sikh-American Nonprofit Embodies True Sikhi Spirit Amid Los Angeles Fire Devastation

by Harleen Kaur

In the wake of one of the most catastrophic fires in Los Angeles history, a beacon of hope and compassion has emerged from the Sikh-American community. “Let’s Share a Meal,” a nonprofit organization inspired by the teachings of Guru Nanak, has been tirelessly providing free meals and essential supplies to thousands affected by the blaze in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

Onkar Singh, a dedicated volunteer and spokesperson for “Let’s Share a Meal,” shared the organization’s heartfelt mission. “Every day is getting better,” he remarked, reflecting on the initial chaos and panic that gripped the community in the immediate aftermath of the fire two weeks ago. Singh emphasized that beyond the tangible support, the organization aims to offer reassurance and solidarity to those who have lost their homes.

“Our volunteers went and told them, ‘We are with you. Your main thing is you are alive. The whole world is with you,’” Singh explained. This profound message of unity and support resonates deeply with the core principles of Sikhism, which emphasize selfless service, community support, and unwavering compassion for all.

The nonprofit’s efforts extend beyond providing meals. Essential commodities such as baby food, diapers, clothes, and hygiene products are being distributed to those in need. “We deliver baby bikes, baby diapers, baby food. Mostly we work with baby formulas. We bring in pallets, popcorn, water, hand wipes, toothpaste, and toothbrush. A lot of drinks, mixed soda, juice,” Singh detailed. Volunteers navigate from shelter to shelter, ensuring that no family is left without the necessities to rebuild their lives.

The impact of the fire has been widespread, affecting both affluent communities and those already struggling with economic hardships. Singh highlighted the inclusive nature of their assistance, noting that many of the victims are seeking shelter and immediate support. “Some people are looking for shelter as well,” he added, underscoring the organization’s commitment to aiding all affected individuals, regardless of their background.

“Let’s Share a Meal” has a longstanding history of service, having served over one million meals across the United States since its founding in New Jersey 12 years ago. This monumental effort stands in stark contrast to the violent rhetoric propagated by Khalistani extremists, who often misrepresent Sikhism through acts of terror and aggression. Instead, the actions of “Let’s Share a Meal” exemplify the true spirit of Sikhi—dedicated to peace, selfless service, and the upliftment of humanity.

Onkar Singh’s leadership and the unwavering dedication of the volunteers highlight the true essence of Sikh teachings. “Our mission is to embody the values of Guru Nanak by serving humanity with love and humility,” Singh affirmed. In a world where extremist ideologies can overshadow the peaceful teachings of a religion, the compassionate work of “Let’s Share a Meal” serves as a powerful reminder of the genuine Sikhi spirit.

As Los Angeles begins the arduous process of rebuilding, the support from “Let’s Share a Meal” offers not just material aid but also a profound sense of community and hope. Their efforts stand as a testament to the enduring values of Sikhism, proving that true strength lies in unity, compassion, and unwavering support for one another.
