Amritsar Unveils Innovative QR Code Initiative to Preserve Cultural Legacy

by Manjari Singh

In a dynamic move to bridge the gap between Amritsar’s illustrious past and its vibrant present, Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney underscored the necessity of imparting the city’s rich cultural and historical narratives to the younger generation. This initiative was prominently featured during a Heritage Walk organized by Punjab’s Tourism Department, commemorating World Heritage Day.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Sawhney highlighted the introduction of a cutting-edge QR code system designed to enrich the experience of the thousands of daily pilgrims visiting the holy city. “Many of our visitors cherish the spiritual essence of Amritsar but remain unaware of its profound historical significance,” Sawhney remarked. The QR codes, strategically placed at pivotal locations such as the bus stand, railway station, airport, and major city squares, allow visitors to effortlessly access detailed information about Amritsar’s heritage sites in Hindi, Punjabi, and English via their smartphones.

The Heritage Walk, spearheaded by Sawhney in collaboration with the Voice of Amritsar and the Aghaaz NGO, commenced at the Town Hall and traversed several landmark sites. Participants explored the revered Gurdwara Saragarhi, the historic Qila Ahluwalia, the bustling Jalebi Wala Chowk, and the serene Udasi Ashram Akhara Sangla Wala, among other significant locations. The route also included visits to Darshani Deori, Chaurasti Attari, Baba Bohar, Katra Kharian Street, and the traditional old bazaars, before returning to the Town Hall.

Emphasizing the initiative’s objectives, Sawhney stated, “Our primary goal is to educate both the younger generation and our esteemed visitors about the deep-rooted history and cultural wealth of Amritsar. The QR code system is a step towards making this knowledge accessible and engaging.” She stressed that preserving Amritsar’s heritage is a collective duty, urging parents to actively educate their children about the city’s storied past to foster a sense of pride and awareness in future generations.

The event saw participation from several notable figures, including SDM Mankamal Chahal, Assistant Commissioner Gursimran Kaur, Red Cross Secretary Samson Masih, Tehsildar Rajinder Kaur, and other key members from INTACH and the Amritsar Foundation. The presence of numerous schoolchildren and local citizens further underscored the community’s commitment to safeguarding Amritsar’s legacy.

As one of India’s oldest cities, Amritsar boasts a priceless history that continues to shape its cultural landscape. With initiatives like the Heritage Walk and the innovative QR code system, the district administration is taking significant strides to ensure that this legacy is not only preserved but also vividly communicated to all who walk its historic streets.
