Punjab Strengthens Anti-Drug Efforts with New Task Force and Advanced Resources

by Parminder Singh Sodhi

In a major push to combat the growing menace of drug abuse, Punjab has inaugurated the office of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and launched a dedicated anti-drug helpline along with a WhatsApp chatbot. The newly established helpline number is 9779100200.

The state government has renamed its apex drug law enforcement unit from the Special Task Force to the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, signifying a renewed commitment to tackling drug-related issues. The ANTF will operate from its new office on the second floor of the recently renovated Sohana police station in Sector 79. The renovation of the building, which cost Rs 90 lakh, reflects the state’s determination to enhance its capabilities in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

To bolster its effectiveness, the ANTF’s manpower is set to double from the current 400 to 861. This expansion is part of a larger initiative by the Punjab Police Department, which is creating 10,000 new posts across various units.

In a substantial investment in technology and infrastructure, the state government has allocated Rs 12 crore for the current financial year to transform the ANTF into a cutting-edge agency. This funding will support the acquisition of advanced software, hardware, and infrastructure upgrades. Additionally, to improve operational mobility, 14 new vehicles will be provided to the ANTF.

Further enhancing its operational capacity, the government has earmarked a one-acre plot in Mohali for the construction of an independent headquarters for the ANTF. An additional Rs 10 crore will be sanctioned from the Punjab State Cancer and Drug Addiction Treatment Infrastructure Fund to support the Enforcement-De-Addiction-Prevention strategy.

These initiatives underscore Punjab’s resolute effort to combat drug abuse through enhanced law enforcement, cutting-edge technology, and comprehensive prevention strategies.
