Politics Heats Up Over the Deportation of Indian Immigrants from the U.S.

by Sudeep Singh

The U.S. administration is rapidly working to send back Indians who have been residing illegally in the country. As a result, 104 Indians were sent back earlier, and today, 114 more have been sent back to India. The planes carrying these immigrants have been landing at Amritsar Airport in India, which has sparked strong opposition not only from Punjab’s Chief Minister but also from Congress MPs and other political leaders. They argue that when demands are made for direct flight services from Amritsar or other cities in Punjab to countries like the U.S. and Canada, the Indian government dismisses these requests citing security concerns. However, these planes bringing back Indian immigrants from the U.S. are being allowed to land in Amritsar, even though these immigrants are from all over the country. Why, then, is Punjab being stigmatized?

In response, BJP national spokesperson RP Singh stated that those questioning this process may not be aware that Amritsar Airport is the closest point for entry from the U.S. to India, which is why it was chosen. He also criticized the Congress for only attacking the central government on this issue.

After the U.S., similar processes could soon begin in other countries, which is particularly concerning for those living and working illegally in countries like the U.S. and Canada. Many of these people sold all their property, invested their savings, and even took loans from banks or private companies to go abroad. Now, with this deportation process, their entire capital will be lost, and they will have no source of income left, causing significant worry for these families.

Moreover, the manner in which the U.S. has been deporting immigrants has left many in India upset. They believe that these individuals are being brought back in shackles, which is not justifiable under any legal system. While these immigrants may have been residing illegally, they have not committed serious crimes. After boarding the planes, at least the handcuffs should have been removed, they argue. The American administration’s reasoning for this action remains unclear and raises many questions.

Daljeet Singh from Bihar believes that especially the younger generation should learn from this situation. Instead of going abroad to work, they should focus on finding employment within India. This would allow them to stay with their families while contributing to the country’s progress.
