Case of Desecration of Sikh Guard’s Turban in Australia

by Sudeep Singh

The increasing incidents of desecration of Sikh turbans around the world have become a matter of serious concern. The latest incident has been reported from Victoria, Australia, where a Sikh youth working as a security guard in a mall was assaulted by some miscreants who forcefully removed his turban. Such incidents often occur in India as well, which is a serious concern, especially because Sikhs are generally known for coming forward to serve humanity in times of crisis.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shared the story of Sikh gurus’ sacrifices and their spirit of selflessness with the people of India, resulting in some positive changes in public perception, such incidents still occur, especially in areas where the Sikh population is small. In many foreign countries, Sikhs are often mistaken for Muslims and are targeted with racial attacks simply because they wear turbans, similar to how some Muslims tie headscarves.

Governments and social organizations are running awareness campaigns to educate people that Sikhs are a peace-loving community who are always ready to serve others.
