The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur celebrated one of its most illustrious alumni, Yatindra Pal Singh Suri, during its grand 70th Convocation held on December 30, 2024. Mr. Suri, a proud member of the class of 1975 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, was bestowed with the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of his remarkable achievements and unwavering commitment to the steel industry, corrosion management, alumni engagement, and social development.
Mr. Suri has been a stalwart in the stainless steel sector, demonstrating exceptional problem-solving skills and a logical approach to engineering challenges. As the Co-Chair of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Corrosion Management Committee, he has been at the forefront of pioneering efforts to combat corrosion, significantly contributing to India’s ambition to become a corrosion-free nation. His leadership was instrumental in implementing the CII National Mission on the War Against Corrosion, a strategic initiative born out of the 2014 Memorandum of Understanding between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Barack Obama.
Under Mr. Suri’s guidance, the steel industry has witnessed transformative changes. He successfully expanded export markets to the USA, European Union, and Canada, ensuring adherence to responsible trade practices and skillfully navigating the complexities of anti-dumping duties. His visionary approach led to the introduction of eCommerce in the steel sector, revolutionizing traditional business models and setting new standards for innovation and efficiency.
