Phagwara Ignites Women’s Football Spirit as GNA University Launches National Tournament

In a resplendent display of sport and culture, GNA University in Phagwara unveiled the much-anticipated All India Inter University Football Tournament (Women) today. Spanning six days—from January 11 to 16, 2025—the tournament promises fierce competition among 16 teams representing the nation’s four zones.

The grand opening ceremony, held at the university’s expansive football field, set the tone for the event with a vibrant fusion of athletics and tradition. Students captivated the audience with energetic performances of Luddi, Bhangra, and other regional folk dances, warmly welcoming the participating teams from across India.

Among the early highlights was the inaugural match featuring a spirited clash between GNDU, Amritsar, Punjab, and LN Mithila University, Darbhanga, Bihar. The match not only ignited local enthusiasm but also underscored the competitive spirit that the tournament aims to foster.

The event was graced by prominent academic and sports figures, including Sr. Gurdeep Singh Seehra, Chancellor of GNA University, and Ms. Jasleen Seehra, affectionately known as Chancellor Ma’am. Their presence, along with that of Dr. Hemant Sharma, Vice Chancellor, and Dr. Monika Hanspal, Dean Academics, symbolized the institution’s robust support for women’s sports and higher education.

Teams from some of India’s leading universities—including Adamas University, University of Calicut, Goa University, and others—have converged in Phagwara, each eager to etch their name in the annals of this prestigious tournament. The diverse participation not only showcases the depth of talent across the country but also reinforces the growing influence of women in competitive sports.

As the tournament unfolds over the coming days, organizers and spectators alike anticipate a blend of competitive spirit, cultural celebration, and academic camaraderie—a testament to the unifying power of sports. The All India Inter University Football Tournament (Women) stands as both a celebration of athletic prowess and an enduring legacy for female empowerment in the realm of university sports.
